Edgar Allan Poe was a great author. He was born on January 19 th, 1809. He was born to Elizabeth and David Poe Jr. They were both actors and very busy. Poe’s real name was Edgar Poe. Poe had an older brother William Henry Leopard Poe and a younger sister, Rosalie Poe.

In 1810, Poe’s father left his family. About a year later, his mother died of consumption. Edgar and his siblings all went to different families. Poe went to live with John Allan, a Scottish tobacco merchant living in Richmond, Virginia. Poe had a happy life with his foster family. As a show of respect, he took the middle name of Allan.

In 1815, the family, along with Poe, traveled to Chelsea, England. Poe was exited to start school there, but he went to Scotland for his education. After his years of school in England and Scotland, he attended University of Virginia, but left within a year. After his year in collage, he moved to Boston under the name of Henri Le Rennet and published ‘Tamerlane and Other Poems.’

He still made money, but Poe was poor and needed money. So he joined the United States Army. After a while, he assumed the rank of Sergeant Major. In 1829 Poe moved to Baltimore to live with his widowed aunt and his cousin, Virginia Eliza Clemm.

In 1831, Poe got a job as the assistant editor of the Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond. After a short period of time, he got dismissed for being drunk too often. After he got dismissed, he moved back to Baltimore and secretly married his cousin Virginia, while she was thirteen.

On the sixteenth of May, Poe publicly Virginia Clemm in 1836. They had a good life together. Before they got married, Poe, out of trust, got his job back the Southern Literary Messenger. But in 1837, he left his job to spend time with his wife. In 1839, he got a job in the Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine as the assistant editor. In 1840, he left the magazine.

Virginia broke a blood vessel in 1842. Out of memory, Poe knew this was a sign of consumption. Although she recovered, it was only a part recovery. Out of stress and worry, he began drinking heavily, again.

In 1847, Virginia died of tuberculosis and left Poe with a broken heart. With that, he continued drinking very heavily. He began to meet Sarah Helen Whitman, but they did not continue due to the meddling of her mother. Poe then returned to Richmond and began to meet his childhood sweetheart, Sarah Elmira Royster.

After meeting Sarah, he decided to go to Baltimore, without her. Sarah got angry and said not to come back. Poe moved to Baltimore and began drinking again.

On October 3 rd, 1849, Poe was found in the streets of Baltimore lying on the ground. He was in a delirious condition from being drunk. Poe was sent to a hospital. Poe died from to much alcohol and being drunk too often. Edgar Allan Poe died on October 7 th, 1849, four days after he was found in Baltimore. Poe will always be remembered as a great poet.
